Skin Conditions and Phototherapy

UV Psoriasis Light Treatment

Psoriasis is characterized by patches of inflamed red skin. Psoriasis develops because the outer layers of skin cells reproduce too fast. Psoriasis causes pain and itching, limited motion, and stress. Recent studies show that psoriasis may be an immune disorder in which T-cells behave abnormally. UV psoriasis light treatment, also known as UV phototherapy, exposes the T-cells, causing them to die. In this way, phototherapy light reduces inflammation, and slows the rate of skin cell production. During the clearing phase, UV phototherapy treatments are 3 to 5 times a week with increasing exposures. UV psoriasis light treatment helps clear or improve psoriasis in most people. Doctor may prescribe UVA, UVB or Narrow Band UVB light. View UV phototherapy-psoriasis research

UV Vitiligo Light Treatment

Vitiligo is characterized by loss of pigment in patches of the body. Vitiligo provides little physical discomfort, though it is often quite distressing. Scientists believe that vitiligo may be an autoimmune process in which the body destroys its own pigment. UV light, or phototherapy vitiligo treatment can help create repigmentation. This process is slow, working from the outer edges of each patch inward, so regular phototherapy vitiligo treatment is prescribed.  Phototherapy vitiligo treatment may continue twice a week for a year or more. Primarily Narrow Band UVB lights are prescribed.  View UV phototherapy-vitiligo research

UV Eczema Light Treatment

Eczema is characterized by itchy patches of dry, red skin which sometimes appears scaly or crusty. Irritating, uncomfortable, and stress-inducing, it is sometimes referred to as “the itch that rashes”. People with eczema have an overactive inflammatory response to irritating substances. This may be an allergic response or coexist with other allergies. UV light can be an effective treatment. UVA, UVB, and Narrow Band UVB light  treatments are prescribed.
